What Are the Current Ways To Quit Smoking?


– The paradigm for quitting smoking
has changed over the years.
We used to treat with a medication.
If that didn’t work we’d
maybe try something different,
but now I am going to give
you every single tool I can
right from the start.
I have several medications that can help
with the oral fixation
that comes with smoking,
that can help with the brain’s
response to the nicotine,
I have medications that can
help with the depression
that maybe you’ll feel losing
the boost of that nicotine,
and I even have a medication
that can help prevent weight
gain with stopping smoking
which is something
that my female patients always appreciate.
Because the addiction to
smoking is multifactorial,
so is the treatment approach,
and so medications can
be an important part
especially if helping ease a
patient down from the nicotine.
We really need to go broader than that.
Exercise, healthy food.
I tell my patients vitamin F
and vitamin X for healthy food,
good exercise, those are gonna help a lot
with some of the side effects of smoking.
Getting social support,
reach out to your friends and family.
Let them know your stop date.
Let them help cheer you on
while you go through this.
Really examine your life.
Find out what were my
triggers for smoking,
and start figuring out how to avoid those
or how to address those.
Don’t go back to that bar
where you always smoked with
your buddies because you know,
it’s just gonna drag you back in.
