Vape store owners outraged over possible flavored e-cigarette ban

good evening I’m Alexandra Carter Dylan Austin is off tonight new at 10:00 local health officials and vapes store owners are reacting to president Trump’s possible ban on flavored vaping products the Health and Human Services Secretary says the Food and Drug Administration will develop guidelines to remove all east cigarette flavors from the market especially those favored by children wge M’s Britney’s spoke with them he joins us live in Quincy with the story Bret well Alexandra officials here at the Adams County Health Department say more research needs to be done but those that sell e-cigarettes like this one say their products aren’t the issue tonight owners of vape stores like Main Street vapor store and lounge and Hannibal are outraged over President Trump’s proposal to ban flavored vaping products if put into effect they say the ban would wipe out almost every product on these shelves all of it I have maybe like three or four flavors that even my tobacco flavors have like other things added into it like caramel tobacco or peanut tobacco something like that was something added into it owner Kevin Mitchum says a majority of his customers come to him seeking a way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes take that away he says they will go right back to tobacco it kills a lot of people’s ability to quit they don’t have a choice to get away from that cigarette taste and that really is part of it Luke Spaulding is one of those former smokers he says even if stores can’t sell the flavored product he and other people who vape will still find a way to buy it people who like can still get it online and they will it’s just they’re not gonna go into the shop to do it but health officials say there is so much uncertainty that surrounds vaping they say it hasn’t been around long enough to understand its full effects we have kids who are starting today and thinking it’s a healthier turn to tip to smoking and we have nothing to prove that it is in fact right now what we’re seeing is that it is dangerous and it is unhealthy so we want to encourage everybody not to start vaping if you are doing it to quit and the FDA regulates these cigarettes and has the power to ban vaping flavors they have yet to take that step and even with more and more calls to do so there’s no word on when that could happen live in Quincy Brett nice wgm news Brett thank you this story continues tomorrow morning Illinois Senator Dick Durbin weighs in on the vaping epidemic here his thoughts on wgm news today that starts at 5:00 a.m.
