The role of tobacco use and the impact on the treatment of head and neck cancer

– I think there’s several key factors
that probably lead to
these poor survival rates.
One of them, quite honestly, is that
the cancer cells don’t always
respond to our treatments
so that we leave a few behind
or there’s a few that
survive the treatment
and then can grow and
produce a tumor again.
The second major factor
is that these cancers
have a fairly high propensity
to spread elsewhere,
so to the glands or the
lymph nodes in the neck,
or to more distant sites like the lung.
And once they sort of escape
from their primary site,
they’re much harder to control
with the therapies that we
have available to us currently.
