Mystery Review – September 2019 – Smokingpipes.com

– Hi, I’m Andy Wike.
– I’m Shane Ireland.
– And I’m Truett Smith.
– And welcome back to another
episode of the Mystery Review!
– This is September’s edition
– Shane got it right!
– Yeah I got it right the first time!
I came in here real ready
– We know what month it is
– It’s technically September right now.
And we had another guest inquisitor,
although I can’t recall,
is this his first time as
guest inquisitor?
– Yeah, it is I think.
– Ah, okay.
– So our very own Mike
Flanigan, I.T. Wonderkid
– System Boy
– Yeah, Systems Administrator.
He makes the internet happen around here,
that’s all we really know about him.
But he’s also an avid
pipe smoker and collector
With a pretty a pretty
deep cellar that he’s
amassed over the last handful of years.
– And if I had to guess,
I suspect this is likely
– From his cellar, I was
gonna say the same thing.
As soon as I opened the bag I thought
“Okay, Virginia may or
may not contain perique
and my guess is that it’s
two to four years old.”
– Probably, So somewhere in
the early stages of it’s long
rest, hibernation, but it definitely
smells like it’s mature.
Really fruity smelling.
– Before we get into it,
we’ve got to introduce
our pipes, like we’ve been doing.
– Oh, yeah!
– So, Andy, what are you smoking?
– This is my Michail Kyriazanos Bulldog
– Great pipe.
– Thank you.
– I’m smoking an I.M.P.
Nose Warmer Billiard.
– And I’m smoking a Tom
Eltang Signature Poker.
So, onto the blend.
Yeah, like Shane said
when I first smelled it
it was pretty fruity,
definitely like that molasses,
aged, Virginia type smell.
So, I’m definitely going with
it coming from, Mikes, cellar.
– A little bit of honey maybe.
I think there’s, like, stone
fruit in here for sure.
Like it’s figgy and plummy.
I was getting a little
bit of citrus when I first
opened the bag, but now that
I’ve rubbed out the flakes,
because they were intact
flakes, by the way,
now that I’ve rubbed them out I don’t get
a ton of the citrus, it’s mostly just a
dark fruit thing.
– Yeah
– My biggest question so far is
whether or not it has perique.
I’m leaning in the
direction of it does not.
I don’t know what you guys think, but-
– Yeah, I haven’t picked up anything that
reminds me of perique.
– In the bag note is where I really
– Really?
– Was thinking about it.
Yeah, just because it does
have that figgy, plummy,
– Oh the stone fruits
– All I know is it’s producing
a hell of a lot of smoke.
Like it is like a really,
really thick mouth feel.
– I also recently opened and
smoked through a 2006 Escudo,
and some of the notes
that I got from that tin
reminded me of when I smelled this.
– That would make you think perique also.
– That’s why I was thinking perique, yeah.
– Now based on the cut,
I compared it to a tin of
Mac Baren that I had opened
and the flakes looked really similar.
– If I had to guess I would
say this was made in Germany.
– Really?
– At first I was gonna
guess Sillem’s 1814 Mayor
or whatever the Chancellor is.
I think that that is probably what it is
I waffle back and forth between that
and Fribourg and Treyer brown flake
or maybe like Wessex Brown.
Like those sort of darker Virginia’s that
have fruity overtones to them
but not necessarily perique.
I don’t know the last time you
smoked Wessex Virgina Brown
– God, it’s been years.
– It reminds me a lot of
that, Brown Virginia rather.
– I might be way off but
it’s kinda reminding me
of a Virginia Burley Flake.
– Really?
– Yeah.
– See that’s another
interesting point though,
because if it’s reminding you
of a Virginia Burley Flake
that could be some perique too.
Especially since this does,
this likely has a little
bit of age on it, the lines
start to blur a little bit
between burley’s influence
and perique’s influence,
in my opinion.
– I also did just spend all
morning smoking Burley Flake.
– Oh, yeah.
– Not out of this pipe, so it’s not
– But still, yeah I hear ya.
– Residual aroma but my pallet could be
a little bit biased. – I
was actually smoking an aged
Fribourg and Treyer Brown flake
this morning so maybe
I’m confusing myself too.
I am still gonna guess one
of the Sillem’s flakes,
definitely not the Commodore,
which is the latakia one.
So I guess for me now
it’s like, I was confused
because when I was getting
some of that citrus-y note,
I said honey earlier too, the Mayor flake,
which is the yellow tin,
has honey and orange
flavorings to it.
Now the sort of turquoise/teal
tin, the blue one,
which is the Chancellor, that
has a little bit of perique,
and it’s red Virginia based.
So I actually think
I’m gonna go with that.
I’m gonna say this is Sillem’s
Counscilor, Chancellor,
whatever the hell it is.
– What’s in those?
That’s straight Virginia?
– The mare is a bright Virginia
flake with honey and orange.
The blue tin, which is the
Councilor or Chancellor,
I can’t remember,
that is a red Virginia
with perique, I believe.
So I think that’s my guess.
You guys have any specific
guesses before we press play?
– Nothing specific. I don’t
think I’ve smoked this before.
I’ll go a little bit out
on a limb and I’ll say it’s
Virginia Burley.
– Okay.
– I’ll say it’s a Virginia Burley flake.
– I’m just gonna throw a wild
card and say Patriot Flake.
– Patriot Flake? Dan?
– Yeah.
– Really?
– Yeah.
– What made you think that, Andy?
– (laughs) Shot in the dark.
It’s a shot in the dark.
(imitates gun shot sound)
– I think it’s a little
fuller than the patriot flake,
than I remember the patriot flake.
– I think so too but if
it’s two to four years old.
– That’s true. Okay let’s see.
– I do know Mike has some
Dan tobacco in his cellar.
So, if that helps at all.
– Are we ready to find out?
– Yeah let’s see.
– Let’s find out.
– Hey. Mike Flanigan here,
I’m the Systems Administrator
for Laudisi Enterprises.
I’m in the Inquisitor Chair.
First time, maybe more.
I wanted to try to throw
these guys for a loop,
see how it goes.
I picked a Virginia perique
blend, from my cellar.
It’s got about three years of age on it.
It is Sillem’s Councilor 1695 Flake.
It’s a really good blend,
I hope they get it.
– So, first of all, he’s technically
the Systems Administrator,
we should note that.
– Secondly, Shane nailed that.
– Yeah (laughs)
– Secondly, you just can’t be beat.
– I don’t know man, Kaz is pretty good.
– Yeah. I don’t know.
– I wish that I was more sure about
the presence of perique.
Honestly that was the
one thing I was still
waffling back and forth between.
Even now that we know
that that’s what it is
I don’t think this is
a heavy perique blend.
It’s pretty subtle.
– Mmh-hmm.
– But that’s pretty
typical of the German guys.
They don’t usually blend
with a real heavy hand
when it comes to the condiment tobaccos.
– I also wonder if we
guessed pretty early on-
like I’m not even into the
second half of this bowl.
– Sure, sure.
– And it is starting,
granted I just heard what the
components were so that’s
gonna affect what I taste,
which is always a super
interesting aspect.
– I lit up a little bit
before we came in here
and I’m getting a lot of
the dark red fruit and
the stone fruit.
Also, some fermented hay and some typical
sour Virginia notes like
Red Virginia tang and stuff.
Through the retrohale now the
spice is definitely building.
– Yeah, for me too.
– Well, yeah, I don’t know.
I feel like I wasn’t even
present for this one.
To be honest with you.
Like I just sort of sat
here and smiled and nodded.
– Yeah.
– Smile and wave.
– Well I mean, then how
wrong could you be right?
– Right.
(laughs)
– But yeah, this is really good.
This is one of those rare moments for me
where I’m actually gonna
take the rest of the bag
that I’ve got and smoke
through it, for sure.
– Oh yeah, for sure.
– And I will say that
I’ve smoked this before,
and I remember enjoying
it, it was a long time ago.
I don’t have any in my
cellar, I probably need to
try to rectify that.
– Yeah, I’ve never had this
before but I definitely like it.
– It’s really good.
– Yeah, same.
– So, well done Mike! First
time in the inquisitor chair.
– Thanks Mike!
– You’ve stumped two out of three of us.
– That’s right.
– Now that your tin’s open
I’m gonna have to come by
and take a couple.
– Thanks for watching guys!
– We’ll see you next time.
– See you next time.
