How Cigars are Made : Making Cigar Wrappers

Now, in this clip we’re going to talk about
wrapper. Now, when you get wrapper it usually
comes in what they call tamp. Now, this is
how they ferment it in the barn, it’s usually
hanging on a stick for a while until it turns
brown. When they get it to the table, when
they get it in the factory they actually sort
it out by color usually, or they actually
do it after they wrap the cigar and they color
sort them after they’re dry. Now, as you can
tell, it’s tied together. There’s quite a
few leaves in this tamp. Deveining is usually
done by a machine now to speed up the process,
but the old-fashioned way of deveining is
pretty much the way I do it. Now, the ways
to devein a tobacco leaf in the old-fashioned
method; you fold the leaf in half and you
grab the vein, you start pulling it out and
you hold the top and you make a fist around
the top. Just wrap it around your wrist. In
doing that, you just yank out the vein. That
leaves you with two wrapper leaves — one
and two.
